The tree of life quilt is made up of memories. It is bright and colorful and hangs in the main lounge room of the home. It immediately catches your eye and invites you to come closer to look at it. On close reflection you can see detailed embroideries – flowers, cats ,dogs, the clouds, balloons.

The rainbow is one of the most beautiful sights in nature; and this symbol of hope is prominent on the quilt.

Residents and families can feel dismay at entering long term care but the quilt ceremony when the resident selects a leaf and hangs their leaf on the tree of life quilt reminds them of hope and the opportunities that come from new beginnings.

The resident selects a leaf of the style and colour they like and their name is written on the leaf. Residents, staff and their families watch and encourage the resident as they select their preferred place on the quilt and hang their leaf.

This is symbolic of their presence at Amity. Together they make up the foliage of the tree. Like a tree needs leaves to live Newcomb needs the residents to live.

An important part of Amity at Newcomb is the staff. The staff are recognized in the flower border of the quilt.
